Vietnam veteran Larry Ritland departed Welsh Church Cemetery, north of Sharon Center, on Tuesday morning, Sept. 3, for a 26-day legacy bicycle ride terminating in Sweetwater, Texas. The purpose of his ride? To pay tribute to women who served as Airforce pilots in WWII (WASPs). His ride began at the grave of Gleanna Roberts, one of two Iowans who lost their lives during the war; it will end at Avenger Field, where the women were trained to fly military aircraft. Daughter Lindsey Ritland Ante accompanied him on the first day of his ride; follow his progress online at facebook.com/theoldcyclingveteran.
