Dear Editor,
I am a member of the Washington Community School Board and am writing to urge citizens of our county to vote NO in the special election on June 29th.
The passage of the two constitutional amendments on the ballot has the potential for damaging one of Iowa’s most cherished assets: our public schools. The amendments are complicated and many people have no idea what their real effect will be if they are passed—SO WHY ARE THEY BEING CONSIDERED IN A SPECIAL ELECTION THAT WILL COST THE TAXPAYERS $1.5 MILLION? Mainly because a few super wealthy Iowans have given hundreds of thousands of dollars to the legislature in an attempt to save themselves money and potentially hurt Iowa’s schools. The people that ARE thinking about Iowa’s schools— the Iowa PTA, the Iowa Association of School Boards, Iowa State Education Association and the School Adminstrators of Iowa— oppose passage of the amendments.
I believe that anyone who cares about Iowa’s schools should vote NO on the proposed Constitutional Amendments.
Julie Peshkin,
Washington, Iowa
