The proposed 60% constitutional amendment will limit our ability to govern…
By Tracy Anderson
Dear Editor,
The proposed 60% constitutional amendment will limit our ability to govern ourselves. It will hamper our free institutions by weakening the one-man one-vote principle.
This proposed amendment is political: It is about the distribution of power in Iowa. The issue is: Should we give greater protection to wealth by making it harder to tax it?
The supporters of this amendment are those who personally have the most to gain by its passage; those who have the privileges and power that wealth makes possible, and those who distrust government by the people. Their campaign has been well-financed and highly effective.
The opponents have been reduced to stammering uneffectually about democratic principles and the rights of the people.
If this amendment passes, we will all just have to make do with less freedom. Who does that help?
