The Kalona Public Library Foundation became a reality this month when seven residents signed on as founding directors.
The meeting at the Kalona Chamber of Commerce Building resulted in Scott Stapleton, Velma Skola, Martha Beckman, Charles Yoder, Dean Miller, Kathy Jepson and Anne Skaden becoming the initial directors. Their action permits filing registration documents for the foundation.
However, the larger task—of qualifying for federal designation as a charitable organization—is expected to take approximately one year.
The foundation, which is completely separate from the library and its board of trustees, will serve as an adjunct to the library, specifically in assisting with fund raising. Donations made to the foundation, once it achieves charitable status, will be tax-deductible.
The foundation is expected to function in a similar manner to the Mid-Prairie School District Foundation.
