WAPELLO
Lindsy Massner, Wapello’s 5-foot-8 senior forward, just couldn’t be stopped.
Massner, who ranks among the top 7 in both scoring and rebounding in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North, scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in the Arrows’ 52-24 victory over Lone Tree in a game played December 14.
The game also provided a stage for Avery Lisk, a sophomore guard who led the Lions with a season-high 12 points. She hit a 3-pointer in the final quarter and made some big defensive plays. She had a team-high 7 rebounds and a team-high 2 assists.
“She makes plays. She’s scrappy,” Shelman said.
Lisk added 5 points and 4 rebounds in a game against unbeaten Louisa-Muscatine three nights later. She is ranked among the conference’s top five sophomores in both scoring and rebounding.
Lone Tree fell behind 16-2 in the first quarter and could never recover from that early deficit.
The Lions were without 5-8 senior forward Kasey Chown, who remained back in Lone Tree due to illness. Chown is the fifth-leading scorer and rebounder in the SEISC North. Among those Lone Tree coach Ryan Shelman called on 5-9 freshman forward Rylee Shield.
“We were trying to figure it out,” Shelman said.
After scoring just five points in the first half, the Lions scored 9 points in the third quarter and 10 in the fourth quarter.
“I thought our girls played hard,” Shelman said. “Our girls battled, they fought.”
