Students in area schools took part in the Adopt an Astronaut program Friday, January 22.

Thanks to the Iowa Communications Network (ICN), astronaut and Iowa native Major Jim Kelley made cyber visits to more than 100 Iowa classrooms. The live ICN program originated at 9 a.m. from West High School in Iowa City and at 1 p.m. from College Community’s Prairie High School.

The visits coincided with the launching of a new science and computer literacy campaign, Adopt an Astronaut. Major Kelly provided information for students and answered questions about his job as an astronaut and fighter pilot.

Area teachers and students who took part included Chris Soldat, Mid-Prairie Middle School, Chris Brown, Highland Junior-Senior High School, Laura Wolfe, Lone Tree, and Norma Steinbrook, Roosevelt Elementary, Iowa City.

The teleconferences were the start of a long-term project, tracking Major Kelly as he helps with space launches and prepares for his own mission. He will send back progress reports, focusing on how science and computer literary are essential to his job.

Adopt an Astronaut is part of WeatherEye, a local science education Web site sponsored by KGAN-TV, KDSM-TV and the Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIPCO). the ICN sessions are sponsored by Grant Wood area Education agency in partnership with KGAN News Channel 2.
