SPRINGVILLE

When Lone Tree quarterback Ethan Bockelman sprinted down the left sideline for a 65-yard touchdown Friday night, the score finished off a perfect half for the Lions.

The Lions scored on their first five possessions against Springville. Emmett Burke had an interception.

Bockelman’s third touchdown of the night on his long run, along with a 2-point conversion pass to Burke, gave the Lions a 35-0 lead and a running clock.

“Getting great block downfield,” Bockelman said. “Finishing our runs and just getting extra yards.”

Those extra yards eventually led to a 47-14 win for Lone Tree, which has averaged 48 points in victories the last two weeks.

Bockelman, a senior, ran for 237 yards and four touchdowns, leading an offense that totaled more than 400 yards. Junior running back Maddox Jondle rushed for 107 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and also scored on a 51-yard pass play from Bockelman in the fourth quarter.

Nearly all of those big plays sent the Lions to plays on the outside and in space. Springville (2-3) couldn’t match that speed.

“They (Springville) really packed it in to take away our inside run game early and it just gave us the outside,” Lone Tree head coach Joe Donovan said. “That got us going. Just kind of opened up everything else.”

The only time Lone Tree didn’t score on a first half possession was because time ran out in the first half. With gametime going faster due to a running clock (state rules call for a running clock when the difference is 35 points or more), the Lions still scored touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters.

“We saw some things and we added a few things this week that I thought we could take advantage of,” Donovan said. “That long touchdown run by Ethan was there and he gave it to Maddox, it was there.”

The Lions struck early, marching 60 yards in eight plays on their first possession for a touchdown and 7-0 lead. Bockelman scored on a 19-yard run less than five minutes into the game.

Jondle scored on a 5-yard run with 3:10 left in the opening quarter, finishing off a three-play scoring drive.

And with 58 seconds left in the first quarter, Bockelman scored on a 23-yard TD run for a 21-0 lead.

“Gives you a lot of confidence,” Bockelman said of the early domination.

“It’s good to see,” Donovan said. “Obviously it isn’t going to be like that every week, and it wasn’t like that week two against Iowa Valley (a 60-14 Lone Tree loss), but the kids have a little more confidence in what we’re doing and we can do the same play out of four different formations.”

An interception early in the second quarter by Burke set up Jondle’s second TD run, a 19-yarder, with 6:56 left in the second quarter. Then, after another defensive stop and punt gave the Lions the ball at their own 15-yard line, Bockelman took the first play 65 yards for a score.

Springville’s first defensive stop came in the third quarter, when Mason Hoy intercepted a Bockelman pass at the Springville 15. Bockelman answered with a 19-yard scoring run later in the third quarter and a 51-yard scoring pass to Burke in the final quarter.

A Lone Tree fumble in the fourth quarter led to Springville’s first touchdown, a 28-yard run by Conlin House. Hoy scored on a 53-yard TD run with 2:09 left in the game.

The Lions (3-1) host Edgewood-Colesburg (3-1) at 7 Friday night.
