LONE TREE
Folks started lining up before 5 p.m. for Lone Tree Fire & Rescue’s chicken dinner fundraiser on Wednesday, April 24, and the line stretched across the American Legion parking lot as the event got underway. That was thanks more to the number of people who came to support the department rather than the speed of the cooks and volunteers; the assembly-line food service moved fast, and the smell of Broasted chicken was intoxicating.
Caterers Jerry and Margie Sweeting brought out their Broaster Trailer for the event, and inside the trailer Jerry and his crew coated fresh chicken with a flour mixture and lowered the meat into the Broasters. Once cooked, the chicken, which retained its juiciness thanks to the Broasters, was moved into proofing cabinets, where it stayed hot and fresh until needed for plating.
Diners could order their meals to eat in at the American Legion or take out. They watched with hungry eyes as fried chicken, green bean casserole, hashbrown casserole, a roll and a cupcake were piled on their plates. It tasted as good as it looked.
This is the third year Jerry & Margie’s has catered Lone Tree Fire & Rescue’s fundraiser event. The funds raised this year will go toward an emergency lifting cushion, a Lucas Chest Compression System, and battery operated extrication tools for the department.
