IOWA CITY
Police protection in Lone Tree and Hills will cost the cities more than $110,000 combined in Fiscal Year 2025.
The Johnson County Board of Supervisors approved nearly half a million dollars in law enforcement contracts at its June 20 formal session. Included in that is $71,656 for Lone Tree coverage and $38,584 for Hills.
The annual contracts are set with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department for normal police patrols, along with incidents, car accidents or other situations that police are called in to handle.
Lone Tree is contracting for 26 hours of coverage each week at $53 an hour, up from $49 an hour in FY24, and Hills is contracting for 14 hours of coverage each week at the same $53 rate.
The Board also approved sheriff contracts with Solon ($124,020), Swisher ($74,200), Oxford ($35,828) and Shueyville ($38,584).
Johnson County’s Sheriff’s Department provides law enforcement to a number of small cities on a contractual basis. Iowa City, Coralville and North Liberty have their own police departments, but many others don’t, including Lone Tree and Hills.
Lone Tree’s annual contract rose more than $5,000 from FY24 while Hills went up just $14 due to adjusted hours.
The contracts begin with the start of the new fiscal year July 1.
Public Hearings
The Board set an evening public hearing Tuesday, July 9, for its monthly session for consideration of zoning and platting applications. The meeting was moved from Thursday to Tuesday in July because of scheduling conflicts. It will begin at 5:30 p.m.
The Board also set a public hearing for 9 a.m. July 2. The session is set up to consider proposed plans, specifications, form of contract and estimated costs for the Johnson County Historic Poor Farm Kitchen project.
Board Actions
The Board approved a proposal from Sustainable Landscape Solutions of Iowa City in the amount of $12,473 for landscaping at the Historic Poor Farm.
The Board approved an insurance contract with Wellmark Blue Shield Blue Cross.
The Board approved ARPA subrecipient agreements with East Central Iowa Council of Governments (ECICOG), Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity, Iowa Legal Aid and Shelter House for a number of housing rehabilitation and eviction diversion services.
The Board re-appointed Joanne Downes of Oxford to a three-year term on the Commission of Veterans Affairs.
Next meeting: The Board’s next formal session is at 9 a.m. June 27.
