LONE TREE

Without having to worry about traveling and welcoming the competition, Lone Tree track and field hosted the Mike Kautz Invitational this past Monday.

Finishing the night with six first place finishes along with seven second place finishes, the Lady Lions scored a season high 143 points to place second in the final team standings. Louisa-Muscatone took first with 149.

“I thought our performance was outstanding.  I believe Coach Kautz would be proud of the way our team competed,” Lone Tree girls track and field head coach Chad Shield said. “We scored points in all 15 events we entered and it was a total team effort and everyone contributed. I couldn’t ask for more.”

Amidst the competition, there was time taken to honor Lady Lions seniors Sami Branson, Alex Dautremont, Rylee Shield, Hayden Yoder,  and Vivian Zaruba.

“Our Seniors have been awesome for four years,” coach Shield said. “They set the tone and expectation daily. They are a fun, competitive group that has really shaped our track and field program for years to come.”

It was another strong outing in relay races for the Lady Lions as they placed first in the 800m sprint medley, 4x100m relay, and distance medley. They also earned runner-up finishes in the 4x200m relay, 4x400m relay, and 4x800m relay.

Showcasing her talent in a track event and a field event, Ava Christofferson placed first (29.10) in the 200m and first (16-00.50) in the long jump.

Shield earned a first place finish in an individual event, crossing the finish line the fastest (1:03.75) in the 400m. Claiming a pair of runner-up finishes was Zaruba who took second in the 100m (14.35) and the 200m (29.38).

“Rylee and Vivian have been instrumental in our team’s success the past four years,” coach Shield said. “They are both part of four school records, have placed at state multiple times, been to state every year, and have run in the Drake Relays.”

Yoder, Branson, and Dautremont led the way for Lone Tree in the throwing events.

Yoder placed second (31-01) in the shot put and third (78-11) in the discus throw. Dautremont placed fourth (76-09) in the discus and seventh (26-09) in the shot put. Branson placed sixth (27-05.50) in the shot put and seventh (64-05) in the discus.

“They have a great mindset and work hard every single day,” coach Shield said of Yoder, Branson, and Dautremont. “They have thrown in a lot of varsity competitions starting with their freshman year and have been moving up in the standings in meets every single year.”

On the boys side, the Lions ended their home meet with a team score of 44 to place fourth in the final standings. Columbus won the team title with a first place score of 237.

Both Dom Garcia and Emmett Burke gave Lone Tree multiple top three finishes.

Garcia was the runner-up (12.35) in the 100m dash and earned a third place finish (25.75) in the 200m. Burke was the runner-up (57.62) in the 400m and in the long jump his best leap of 16-04.75 landed him third place.

Another Lion to impress in a jumping event was Gray Spilman who cleared the high bar at 5-06 to place third.
