Lone Tree quarterback Cade Shield’s frustration spilled out.

“I need protection!” he yelled as he ran toward the Lions sideline after throwing his first interception under defensive pressure last Friday against English Valleys.

The night grew worse.

Tyler Bell, a senior, who had rushed for three touchdowns in the Lions’ first two wins of the season and was among the team’s top four tacklers on defense, was out of the game by halftime, grimacing in pain with a collarbone injury as he was helped to the medical area.

An hour later, the rest of the Lions emerged with a painful 12-0 loss to English Valleys in the eight-man district opener for both teams. It marked Lone Tree’s first shutout loss since the final game of the 2014 season and its first loss in three games this year.

“I told them I’ll take responsibility for this one,” Lone Tree head coach Aaron Bohr said. “For as hard as we played and for as much as we battled, I should be able as coach to put something together that’s going to get us on the scoreboard. We didn’t get on the scoreboard and I’ll take responsibility for it because we’ve got guys that are good enough.”

English Valleys broke a scoreless tie in the second quarter when Beau Flander returned a punt 52 yards for a touchdown. Flander added another score on a 20-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Outside of those two big plays, Friday’s game was a war fought mostly at the line of scrimmage on a wet field. Lone Tree’s Caden Smith had a team-leading nine tackles and a sack. Cade Patterson had a pair of interceptions along with a game-high seven receptions. Shield faced defensive pressure all night, and was sacked four times and intercepted twice.

“Two very physical teams,” Bohr said. “Two teams really good up front, too.”

Both teams were stopped in their first possessions by interceptions. The Lions lost a fumble. And they made a defensive stop on fourth down. All in the first quarter.

English Valleys quarterback Josh Osborn completed just one pass all night long, was intercepted twice by Patterson and intercepted again by Lone Tree’s Joe Boxwell when the Bears attemped a two-point conversion in the final quarter.

In more than three quarters, the only big play not involving the battle on the line of scrimmage was Flander’s punt return for a score with 5:43 left in the second quarter. That was immediately followed by Lone Tree’s Bell fighting off the English Valleys line to block the extra point.

“I was really just pleased with the guys effort,” Bohr said. “I thought they did a terrific job, I thought they fought the entire time.”

Losing Bell at halftime didn’t help.

“We could have just folded up shop, but our guys kept fighting the entire time. I’m really proud of them for that,” Bohr said.

The Lions attempted an onside kick to begin the second half, but the ball was covered by an English Valleys player.

“We did a really good job on defense, they did a really good job on defense. I think it just came down to a couple of plays,” Bohr said. “That’s how it goes sometimes.”

Lone Tree (2-1) is back home Friday, September 10, to take on HLV (1-2) in another District 6 game.
