DES MOINES
Making his appearance at the state wrestling tournament for the second straight year, Lone Tree’s Brock Nebergall polished off a fruitful sophomore season at the four day spectacle known as the IHSAA State Championships taking place at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines from Feb. 19-22.
In Nebergall’s (1A-120) first match at state he was pitted against Joe Hackett of Columbus Catholic. Near the end of the first period Nebergall scored a reversal to nearly win by fall but time expired.
The second period is where Hackett took control, scoring six points to head into the final period with a 9-2 lead. Hackett cemented his victory in the third period, scoring a victory by fall (4:39) to send Nebergall to the consolation bracket.
Fighting for his tournament life on day two, Nebergall battled Boston Mateer of Interstate 35. Through two periods, Mateer built up a 10-0 lead. Nebergall scored his first point in the third period with an escape but two takedowns gave Mateer the victory by tech fall, 16-1.
With his second loss on day two, Nebergall ended his year with a 16-12 record.
“I was very pleased with Brock’s performance. It may not have been the finish that we wanted, but Brock continues to make great strides in improving his technique and competitive nature,” Lone Tree head coach Brent Nelson said. “He had great competition at the state tournament and I believe it’s those kind of experiences that are going to give him the drive to continue building off of the success he had this season.”
In the offseason Lone Tree will say goodbye to seniors Clemens Swaink, Anthony Hardin, Maddox Jondle, and Brody Magruder.
