Brenton Bonebrake sets new PR with 6-foot high jump

Highland thrower Devin Lovetinksy gave the Huskies some early points again on Monday with a pair of first-place throws in the discus and shot put.

Lovetinsky, who took first place with a throw of 42-03 at an indoor meet on Thursday, threw 41-10 at Columbus to finish first in a field of 19, four feet more than his nearest competitor.

His starting point this season isn’t too far from his career best throw of 42-07, thanks to his weightlifting and participation in other sports over the past season.

Lovetinsky doesn’t have big goals for his senior season beyond improving each time he throws.

“I honestly just want to beat my (personal records) for both (shot and discus), I just want to do better,” he said on Monday. “Honestly, to me, placing doesn’t matter a whole lot. It’s just about beating my PR every time.”

His fellow senior Brenton Bonebrake took first-place in the high jump by over a foot with a new personal best of six feet.

He won the competition with a jump of just five feet. He matched his personal best at 5-10 and cleared 6-00 on his first attempt.

“I was like, today’s the day, I’m going to try,” Bonebrake said. “So I tried and I beat my record.”

Bonebrake had one attempt at 6-02, but stopped after experiencing some discomfort in his calf. Bonebrake was going back and forth between the long jump and high jump on Monday, with some of his high jump attempts coming less than a minute after a long jump.

“There was a lot of pressure on it, because that’s the leg I jump off of for both,” he explained. “I jump up, then I jump out.”

Bonebrake also ran the leadoff leg on a pair of second-place sprint relays with Logan Bonebrake, Tyler Thompson and Connor Grinstead. The Highland 4x100 finished second to Columbus and the 4x200 was also edged by half a second by Winfield Mt. Union.

The sprint medley of Grinstead, Jacob Hill, Logan Bonebrake and Thompson took first.

Highland sophomore Sarah Burton edged a pair of English Valleys sprinters for first place in the 100-meter dash. The Highland girls also took first in the 4x100-meter relay. Mackenzie Hora, Burton, Grace Prybil and Mackenzie McFarland finished with a time of 53.97. Highland added 10 points by fielding the only 4x800-meter relay. The Huskie 4x200-meter relay took second.

Prybil finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 30.46 and Laney Skelton was third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:35.

Andrew Lana finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17 and Nicolas Oriano was second in the 110-meter hurdles with a finish of 21.39.

The Huskies finished third in the team standings for both boys and girls.
