Five Mid-Prairie High School band students performed at the Outstanding Performers Showcase on May 17 at Iowa State University.
A saxophone quintet consisting of Dillon Poole, junior on saxophone, Annika Poll, freshman on saxophone, Jacob Flynn, freshman on tenor saxophone, Madi Davidson, sophomore on tenor saxophone, and Joe Hall, sophomore on baritone saxophone performed “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” at their State Solo and Ensemble in on April 2. They left that contest knowing they’d received a Division 1 rating.
The surprise came in the next few days when band director, David Kunz, was informed that they’d been identified as Outstanding Performers for their contest site. This honor resulted in an invitation to the Outstanding Performers Showcase mentioned above.
The last time an MPHS band student received an Outstanding Performance selection was a French horn solo by Amanda Stout in 2012.
The last time a MPHS saxophone ensemble received an outstanding performance was a MPHS saxophone ensemble in 2001 consisting of Aaron Swartzendruber (alto), Jennifer Gingerich (alto), Kassi Fisher (tenor), Emily Stout (bari).
