Making fire prevention hands on for students at West Elementary

Fire safety is one of the most important, basic precautions a person should know. Most people are taught at a young age to “stop, drop, and roll” if you are caught in a fire. On Friday Oct. 15, 2021 the Wellman Fire Department stopped by West Elementary to display their fire safety.

Tony Rios and Stone Peck brought their fire/rescue truck, loaded up with equipment to show the kids. Peck put on and removed his suit to show just how heavy duty it is. The kids even got an opportunity to try on the fireman’s jacket and helmet.

Last year, the department was unable to come to the schools to visit the kids due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but this year they were more than grateful to put their knowledge on display.

“It’s really nice- getting to see the little-ones and showing them our stuff, since we couldn’t see them last year. It’s always fun to see a few of them perk up and say, ‘Well, I want to be a firefighter one day’,” Rios said.

Having people coming to schools and explaining their jobs is a great way to get kids interested in their future endeavors from an early start. Careers like firefighters and police officers help children understand how different jobs function in a society, and just how important they are.
