WASHINGTON

Martell Guider, 37, of Spencer was arrested January 4 in Cedar Rapids on a Washington County warrant for violation of probation on the original charge of sexual exploitation of a minor. Bond was $10,000 cash only. Extradition arrangements to Washington are to be made.

Guider, then 36, had been found guilty by a 12-member jury August 2, 2024 of sexual exploitation of a minor and was sentenced to a maximum of 25 years October 18 in Washington County District Court by Judge Michael Carpenter. Sentence was then suspended (under Iowa Code 907.3(3)) with Guider placed on probation for five years (two year minimum, 5 years maximum) under the Department of Correctional Services. He also had to comply with sex registry requirements.

Additional conditions were imposed that he register for probation, sign all documents related to the judgement, comply with all terms and conditions of probation and pay all monies required by the probation agreement.

A no contact order also was ordered for five years from the October 18, 2024 judgement. Failure to comply with all terms, agreements and orders could lead to imposition of the 25-year incarceration and possible additional charges. At sentencing, Martell had five days to sign the agreements.

Also ordered was payment of $910 and $915 to public agencies, including expenses of a public defender and the medical assistance program.

Guider initially was charged and tried on four counts: 1, sexual exploitation of a minor (production), a Class B felony; 2, exploitation of a minor (promotion) a Class C felony; 3, sexual exploitation of a minor (possession), a Class D felony; and 4, harassment in the first degree, an aggravated misdemeanor. The jurors found Guider guilty on the first count, the Class B felony, and not guilty on the three others.

According to court records, officials at Pleasantview, Kalona, sometime in January confronted Guider (who had been state certified as a nursing assistant by the Department of Health and Human Services) after multiple employees raised concerns that he was being inappropriate with a minor who was present at the home but not a resident.

According to the police reports, Guider’s colleagues at Pleasantview also complained he had made unwanted advances toward female co-workers at the nursing home. He was then barred from the care facility, according to police.

At the time of his arrest, court records showed he was an employee of Shiiftkey, a provider of workers for health care facilities.
