Mary’s Farm Sanctuary hosted an Art for the Animals fundraiser event on Sunday, September 12. The Sanctuary featured over eight artists and other vendors. All profits made from the event went towards providing a permanent home for unwanted and abused animals.
Sandy Donner, an artist at the sanctuary showed off an assortment of her textural palette knife paintings. From luscious, colorful sceneries to simplistic hearts, Donner displayed her extraordinary visual talents.
“These [paintings] are so much different from paintings I usually see. They are flat colors, but her [Donner’s] paintings are 3-D almost, it makes me want to touch it,” an attender expressed.
The paintings had depth through them, which were created through thicker paints, Donner used a knife to make the “textured look” that looks 3-D.
Another artist featured at the event was Monica Leo, founder of Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre Company and Owlglass Puppetry Centre. Leo is from Dubuque, Iowa and currently lives in West Liberty with her husband. She studied art and English at the University of Iowa and studied studio art at Staatliche Kunstakademie in Dusseldorf, Germany.
Leo uses her talents to craft unique marionettes and puppets for shows and events just like Mary’s Farm Sanctuary. At the art event, she displayed her animal puppets that are perfect for entertaining children and adults.
Aside from the unique artists at the Animal Sanctuary on Sunday, there were also baked goods, succulents, Benjamin Bunnies, pumpkins, gourds and antiques. The delicious cookies and treats were baked by Matisse Arnone, and the adorable succulents were grown by Barb Wagner. The pumpkins and gourds made for a beautiful arrangement that made Fall feel a little closer.
At an animal sanctuary, there of course must be animals. Guests could look at and pet the horses, ponies and donkeys. These animals are now at a happy home, where they are free to wander and enjoy life. The sanctuary is a 501c3 non-profit, so all the money they receive goes towards giving these animals a better life.
