Maurice “Morrie” Pitlick, 84, of Oxford passed away peacefully Jan. 6, 2024, at Briarwood Healthcare Center in Iowa City surrounded by his wife and children.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church in Cosgrove, with burial to follow at St. Peter Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024, from 3-7p.m., at the St. Peter Parish Waldschmidt Hall with a parish Rosary recited at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations will be distributed to organizations that were important to Morrie and can be made to his wife, Marilyn.
Morrie was born Sept. 8, 1939, in Iowa City to Henry and Mary (Harney) Pitlick. He grew up on the family farm outside of Oxford and graduated from Cosgrove High School in 1957. Morrie married his best friend, Marilyn Krob, on Aug. 3, 1959, in Lisbon, Iowa. The couple spent 64 loving and memorable years together while raising their five children on the family farm.
Morrie spent his lifetime doing what he loved most, farming. Farming was his greatest passion since he was a young boy. He was devoted to his faith and was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church where he served on the Parish Counsel for several years, as well as participated in the choir. Morrie served on the Clear Creek School Board, the board of directors for the Cosgrove Institute, and the board of directors at Consumers Co-op. He was also a seed corn salesman for Middlekoop Seed, as well as a salesman for Vigortone Feed.
He loved restoring old tractors and collecting farm toys and was always up for a competitive game of Scrabble. He also enjoyed going to the Depot for lunch with his friends and playing cards at the Institute every Wednesday. Morrie was an avid storyteller, played many musical instruments, and had a colorful sense of humor. Morrie would often take rides just to look at the crops. In his later years, he relished starting his day drinking coffee with Marilyn and doing the daily crossword puzzle. His greatest joy in life was spent in the company of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife: Marilyn; five children: Jeff of Oxford, Mike (Laura) of Iowa City, Julie (Ty) of Blythewood, South Carolina, Pat (Shelly) of Jordan, Minnesota, and Gary (Aimee) of Oxford; sister: Arlene (Jim) Graham of Port Townsend, Washington; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Morrie was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Theresa (in infancy) and Mary Lou; and daughter-in-law: Kathy.
