WELLMAN

Celebrating senior night in front of their home crowd, Mid-Prairie welcomed Monticello and Regina for a pair of conference duals on Dec. 8.

Getting outscored in both duals, the Golden Hawks lost to Monticello, 45-33, and Regina, 48-28. These two losses bring Mid-Prairie’s dual record on the season to 1-4.

Before the Golden Hawks hit the mat to compete in their first dual of the night, Mid-Prairie honored five seniors: Jarron Thomas, Dalton Miller, Noah Freeman, Tucker Miller, and manager Libby Peiffer.

Mid-Prairie opened the dual against Monticello with a win courtesy of Quinn Callahan.

Callahan, a junior at 215, went the distance to pick up a victory by decision, 8-4. Callahan’s victory plus Burke Berry, Trevyn Riley, and Parker English winning by forfeit in the next three matches gave the team a 21-0 lead.

Monticello fought back by winning the next two matches by fall. Junior Max Howe (132) gave Mid-Prairie its second win that wasn’t a forfeit. Howe won his match by fall in 1:39. Tucker Miller gave Mid-Prairie its last win of the dual by forfeit.

Earning enough points to overtake Mid-Prairie, Monticello won the next six matches: three by fall, two by decision, and one by forfeit.

Regina defeated Mid-Prairie by winning eight of the 14 matches, but Callahan, Berry, Riley, Dalton Miller, Howe, and Tucker Miller all earned points for the Golden Hawks.

Callahan won his match by fall in 1:24, giving him two victories on the night. Getting a chance to wrestle after winning by forfeit against Monticello, Berry (285) made quick work of his opponent, winning by fall in 14 seconds.

Tucker Miller (138) defeated his opponent by major decision, 16-7, and Dalton Miller (126) earned a victory by decision, 7-1. Howe won his second match of the night by decision, 4-1.

Colton Allen Memorial Tournament

Getting to stay home for the weekend, the Golden Hawks hosted the annual Colton Allen Memorial Tournament on Dec. 9.

In the past this event was a traditional eight-man bracket tournament, but it is a dual tourney this year. Mid-Prairie battled three teams in this tourney:  Cedar Rapids Prairie, Iowa Valley, and Mediapolis.

The tourney ended with Iowa Valley taking first place and Mediapolis placing second.

The first round saw Mid-Prairie defeat Mediapolis. 42-39. In the second round Iowa Valley defeated Mid-Prairie, 60-24. The third and final round ended with Mid-Prairie losing to CR Prairie, 54-30.

It was a solid night for Mid-Prairie’s Max Howe in the 132 lbs. bracket. Howe won three matches in this tourney: winning against CR Prairie by fall in 59 seconds, against Iowa Valley by fall in 25 seconds, and against Mediapolis by fall in 2:21.

Tucker Miller, at 138, lost against CR Prairie by fall but ended the tourney with two wins. Tucker defeated Iowa Valley by fall in 1:31 and he defeated Mediapolis by fall in 1:31.

Josh Turner and Jarron Thomas also won two matches for Mid-Prairie. Against Mediapolis Turner won by fall in 2:48 and Thomas won by fall in 1:11. Against CR Prairie Turner won by fall in 3:29 and Thomas won by fall in 1:29.
