WELLMAN
Mid-Prairie earned the right to play as a top seed on Thursday, Oct. 17 when the Golden Hawks easily overtook the Saydel Eagles (2-21) 3-0.
The Golden Hawks will host PCM (18-13) on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. to continue their playoff run.
This win gave the Mid-Prairie their first 30-win season in a long time – if ever.
“That’s awesome,” head coach Sherry Evans said, not realizing tonight marked the team’s 30th win. “It shows the hard work that the girls are putting in and [they’re] staying disciplined. I’m proud of them whether they had five wins or 30 wins [because] they do the work.”
Set scores against Saydel were 25-10, 25-4 and 25-6. Everyone got a piece of the action.
Callie Huber led the team in kills with 10 and blocks with one, tied with junior Brylee Gearhart.
Huber is coming off the RVC Tournament in Goose Lake where the junior exceled.
“I think she's just very versatile. She can pull off some shots that I don't understand sometimes, but she does it. Callie is a beast,” Evans said with a laugh, adding that Huber is very coachable, learning new things and playing smart. “She’s a force to be reckoned with, that’s for sure.”
The other usual suspects led Mid-Prairie on the court. Sophomore Jovi Evans led with 24 assists, eight kills and three digs. Junior Dakota Mitchell also had three digs but senior Reese Good who collected some playing time, led with four.
The numbers may seem lower than the norm, but Mid-Prairie simply dominated in the serving game, a 94.5% serving efficiency, collectively.
They also raked in 19 aces, six from Evans; four from Mitchell and sophomore Avery Helmuth; two from junior Lanee Duwa; and one from Harper Pacha, Ava Pence and Reese Good.
Mid-Prairie will have a one-day interlude between play to prep for PCM. Evans wants to host some tough practices to get the team ready for a tougher opponent on Thursday.
“Hopefully [we have] another three-set sweep and just come in [prepared]. The competition's just going to get harder from here on out,” Evans said. “We can't take any team lightly. We just got to come out and play our best.”
