Just call them the come-back kids.
Mid-Prairie girls’ basketball team trailed by six points at the end of the first quarter against West Liberty, Dec. 1 but rallied to regain the lead.
Head coach Deb Kahler knew something needed to be changed so the Lady Hawks changed defenses and went to full court zone press.
Mid-Prairie took the lead with five minutes to go in the second quarter.
The Lady Hawks couldn’t hold on the lead and went into the locker room down by two, 25-23.
The second half belonged to Mid-Prairie and ended the fourth quarter on top, 55-47.
“We went from a man defense to a zone defense and cut down on the dribble penetration,” said coach Kahler.
Sophomore Sarah Larsen led the offense with 19 points and seven assists. Larsen also led the team with six steals.
Senior B.J. Duwa followed with 14 points and five steals. Junior Hannah Berg grabbed eight boards to lead the defense.
“We had nine kids who came in and did a super job for us . It was a total team effort.”
“It’s exciting to see a young club like this come back and work hard.”
This win put Mid-Prairie 1-0 in conference play and 2-1 overall.
Clear Creek-Amana too strong for Mid-Prairie
Rebounding was a problem for the Mid-Prairie girls’ basketball team Dec. 3 against Clear Creek-Amana. The Hawks lost in a close game, 42-40.
Clear Creek-Amana out rebounded Mid-Prairie by 13.
“This was a tough game on the road for us. It was a physical game on the boards and that was the difference in the game.”
Mid-Prairie had the lead early, but got into foul trouble with their post players.
“The foul trouble caused us to have a few break-downs on the defensive end of the floor. Clear Creek-Amana tied the game and took the lead on a breakdown of our defense.”
Duwa led the offense with 15 points. Larsen and Berg led the team with four assists. Larsen also contributed 14 points and six rebounds.
The Hawks only lead was in the first quarter. They tied the game in the third quarter but couldn’t pull away.
“The kids played hard, but they need to put it together for four quarters.”
This loss puts the Hawks 1-1 in conference play.
Mid-Prairie’s next game is against Durant at home, Dec. 10.
