WILLIAMSBURG
Taking the plunge into their first 18-hole competition of the season, the Golden Hawks hit the road to compete in the Williamsburg Girls Golf Invitational on April 16.
With 11 teams in attendance to duke it out, Mid-Prairie ended with a score of 387 and placed third due to a tiebreaker with the host school Williamsburg. Coming out on top was Solon with a first place score of 361.
“This was our first 18 hole meet of the year and went up against great competition,” Mid-Prairie coach Tracy McArtor said. “Williamsburg is always tough at home and Solon showed why they are a state calibur team in 3A.”
Posting the only sub 80 score, medalist honors went to Benton’s Halle Sobaski who shot 77. Solon’s Sydney Dee was the runner-up medalist with 83.
“We knew this would be a good test after playing some pretty good golf early on this Spring in our conference duals,” coach McArtor said. “The girls posted a team score of 387 for the day and that’s some pretty stellar playing for this early in the season and on a tough layout.”
Sophomores led the way for the Hawks. The second-year duo of Olivia Swartzendruber and Morgyn Bender placed fifth and sixth respectively with scores of 90 and 91.
The next best finishes for Mid-Prairie came from two seniors, Addison English and Lilly Miller. English shot 98 to place 14th and Miller ended with 108 to place 23rd.
“We typically don’t see and get a lot of bunker play like Stone Creek offers,” coach McArtor said about the Williamsburg course. “Along with plenty of water, sticky rough, tough par 3’s and a 30 mph wind.”
Mid-Prairie’s Delani Blum and Paiton Chittick, both juniors, finished with scores of 115 and 121 respectively to place 34th and 41st.
Up next for Mid-Prairie is hosting the Golden Hawk Girls Golf Invitational on April 24.
