Mid-Prairie girls host Highland, nine-team wrestling tournament

Mid-Prairie and Highland each had a pair of bracket winners in Monday’s girls wrestling tournament, hosted by the Golden Hawks.

Maddie Peiffer and Mackenzie McFarland each placed first for the Huskies. Mia Garvey and Bronwyn Brenneman were first-place winners for Mid Prairie.

“These were the first matches of the season for a lot of our girls,” said Mid-Prairie wrestling coach Dylan Walther. “It was good to get them out there against an opponent instead of wrestling our teammates.

“We have had a good first few weeks of practice, the girls have been very enthusiastic and itching to learn.”

Garvey went 2-0 with a pair of pins, while Brenneman won three matches with two pins and an 8-0 major decision over CCA’s Stormy Bauwens.

“Bronwyn won arguably the toughest bracket of the tournament,” Walther said. “As always, she showed great perseverance. She almost gave up an early takedown in her first match against Bauwens, but scrambled to score off of it.”

In her match agains Wilton’s Hannah Rogers for first, Brenneman gave up three takedowns and trailed 6-5 in the third period before getting an escape, takedown and the pin.

Madison Kelly and Marissa Cline each went 1-1 to finish second, and Gabi Robertson was 2-1 to take second in her bracket.

“It was good to see Gabi wrestle against other girls,” Walther said. “She has been filling out our varsity 106 spot and has wrestled a lot of guys. Her conditioning paid off as she took control in the third period of her two wins. It’s good to watch her figure things out in-match with the more mat time she gets.”

Grace Conway won her first career match to take second. Ashlee Farrier picked up her first win as well. Abby Grout got her first win for Highland.

Angelina Roling went 1-2 and finished third in her bracket for the Huskies.

“Emil Harmston showed a lot of fight,” Walther said.

Harmston is still looking for her first win, but had a takedown in each of her first two matches on Monday.
