Last year the Mid-Prairie girls began their basketball season with a win against the Fairfield Trojans and this year began the same way.

Staying at home the Golden Hawks kicked off a new season with a convincing 82-40 win over the Trojans on Nov. 21.

From the get-go Mid-Prairie took control of this non-conference matchup, scoring 23 points in the first quarter while holding Fairfield to 10.

Mid-Prairie followed up its impressive 20 plus point quarter with another 20 plus point quarter, scoring 25 to enter halftime with a 26-point lead.

Holding such a large lead the running clock was implemented near the end of the third quarter.

By the time the final frame came around the game was already well in hand, leading to Mid-Prairie subbing out its starters.

A team effort on offense the Golden Hawks had four players finish the game with double digit points.

Scoring a team high 15 points was sophomore Jovi Evans.

Fresh off an exceptional volleyball campaign where she led the team in multiple categories, Evans had a productive night against Fairfield.

She secured four rebounds, six steals and dished out three assists.

Not too far behind Evans in the scoring department was junior Callie Huber putting up 14 points.

A reliable presence near the rim, Huber led the team with six rebounds, five of them being offensive rebounds. As a team the Golden Hawks collected 37 rebounds.

Also playing well on the defensive side of the ball, the Golden Hawks forced 40 Trojans turnovers and held them to single digit points in both the third and fourth quarters.

Mid-Prairie had five Golden Hawks record three steals or more.

Leading the team in steals was a freshman. Brooklyn Schneider recorded a team high seven steals against the Trojans.

Getting to play two home games to begin their year, Mid-Prairie faced off against the No. 3 Benton Bobcats (1-0) on Nov. 28. These two teams faced off against each other last year with Benton taking a 66-43 victory.

Up next for the Golden Hawks will be a road game against the Anamosa Blue Raiders (0-0) on Dec. 1 and then a home matchup against the Northeast Rebels (0-0) on Dec. 2.
