Mid-Prairie Speech Team impresses at Districts

The Mid-Prairie Speech team competed at Keota High School for the Iowa High School Speech Association’s District Large Group Speech Contest on Saturday, January 21. Eight of the nine groups received division 1 ratings for their performances and will advance to IHSSA State Large Group Speech contest. 

The Speech team made it to Districts after a highly successful run at the IHSSA conference contest in Bellevue, where each group received division 1 ratings along with four of the acts placing for “best in center”.

At Districts in the Readers Theatre category, students Chris Burnham, Harlie Gehling, Isadora Goode, Logan McClellen, Jeremiah Rempel, and Caroline Schrader earned a 1 rating for their performance of “Bullies Anonymous”. 

In the Ensemble Acting category, Isabelle Duvall, Harlie Gehling, Isadora Goode, Abrielle Kraus, Daniel Rodgers, and Diego Sanchez earned a 1 rating for their performance of “Amanda Freezes Time”; Haydon Bailey, Jacob Carrillo, Caroline Schrader, and Avery Slaubaugh earned a 1 rating for “Weekend at Bundy’s”; and Kenadi Fay, River Gehling, and Grace Puttmann received a 1 rating for “Role of Della”.

In the Musical Theatre category, Haydon Bailey, Jack Greiner, and Avery Slaubaugh received a 1 rating for their performance of “Spamalot”; Logan McClellen and Jeremiah Rempel earned a 1 rating for their performance of “SpongeBob Squarepants the Musical”.

In the category of Group Improvisation, Jillian Clark and Kenadi Fay earned a 1 rating for their group “Tall and Small”; Chris Burnham, Jacob Carrillo, and Jack Greiner earned a 1 rating for their group “Slimy Bread Yarn”; and River Gehling, Grace Puttmann, and Lincoln Wulf received a division 2 rating for their group “Fruity Iceberg”.

The groups who received a division 1 rating will advance to the IHSSA State Large Group Speech contest at Cedar Rapids Washington High School on Saturday, February 4. There, students will perform for division rankings as well as a chance at Large Group Speech All-State nominations. Congratulations to the MPHS Large Group Speech Team!
