Mid-Prairie student-historian to speak at EV History Center

If you believe “Young people just don’t care about history anymore,” or “Kids these days don’t understand the sacrifices their ancestors made,” 15-year-old Caedyn Huston will surprise you. The Mid-Prairie High School sophomore has a passion for military history, specifically WWII, and on Sunday, Sept. 22, he will share that passion in a program at the English Valleys History Center at 2 p.m.

At a young age, Huston learned of relatives that were active in WWII, including a great-great-great uncle who is the most decorated soldier in the history of Tama County (Harry Shefchik) and a great-great uncle who was killed in action (Charles Polton). His family connection to these soldiers sparked an interest in learning more about them and their history.

Huston researched all 54 Washington County servicemen who died while serving their country during WWII. The result of his research is a 150-page book detailing their stories, which became his 4-H Citizenship and Civil Engagement project.

The project was selected for the 2024 Iowa State Fair, where it was chosen for one of 10 “Future Discovery Awards” chosen by Iowa State University faculty members. The award includes a $500 scholarship to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University.

At the EV History Center, Huston will dress in a full WWII combat uniform and share what daily life was like as a soldier. He will also share the interesting and harrowing stories of soldiers he discovered while researching his book.

Caedyn Huston’s program at the EV History Center will take place on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. The Center is located at 108 N. Main St., North English. All are invited; no cost; donations accepted.
