Oink-tastic! That’s just one word to describe the incredible Farm-to-Fork Adventure recently experienced by Mid-Prairie FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) and FFA students. Forget textbooks and classroom lectures – this was a hands-on, taste-bud-tingling, and truly eye-opening day of learning!
Early on Wednesday, April 2, a busload of eager students embarked on a journey to Brenneman Pork, ready to dive headfirst (metaphorically, of course!) into the world of pork production. The day allowed everyone to experience the full spectrum of the farm-to-fork process.
The students ventured into the pig barns, witnessing firsthand the incredible journey from adorable piglets to grown hogs.
“It was amazing to see how much care goes into raising these animals,” exclaimed student Jaiden Lara. “I had no idea!”
The group also had the opportunity to chat with industry professionals, learning about the diverse careers that make the pork industry tick. From animal care specialists to accountants, students discovered the many paths available within agriculture.
After a delicious lunch provided by Brenneman Pork, the students returned to school, ready for the next phase of their adventure. Students witnessed a fascinating carcass fabrication demonstration Dr. Terry Houser from the Iowa State University Meat Science Department, learning the intricate art of butchery. They also rolled up their sleeves and entered the culinary lab at MPHS, transforming various cuts of pork into mouthwatering dishes.
“The culinary lab was my favorite part!” shared Jason Yoder. “We made everything from pork fajitas to egg roll in-a-bowl, and it was all so delicious. I never knew pork could be so versatile!”
The event also highlighted the significant role pork plays in Iowa’s economy. Did you know Iowa is the nation’s top pork producer? Students learned how this industry supports countless jobs and contributes to the state’s agricultural success. Additionally, Washington County is third in the nation for most hog dense counties.
“This Farm-to-Fork Adventure was a resounding success,” said Sarah O’Rourke, MP FCS Educator and FCCLA Advisor. “We wanted to give our students a real-world, work-based learning experience, and they certainly got that. They learned about agriculture, food production, and the many career opportunities available in this vital industry. They loved the fabrication and culinary lab -- and really saw firsthand how our food gets from the farm to our fork!”
“The students loved making and tasting the pork dishes! I love when they are adventurous enough to try new techniques and flavors,” remarked Glenda Seward, MP FCS Educator and FCCLA Advisor.
“This was an incredibly collaborative effort to bring together the FCCLA and FFA organizations to work together to provide students with such a rich learning opportunity,” Elsa Schmidt, MP Ag Educator and FFA Advisor, said.
A special thank you goes out to our generous sponsor and host, Brenneman Pork, and the Iowa State Meat Science Department, who made this event possible.
The Mid-Prairie Farm-to-Fork Adventure proved that learning can be both educational and incredibly fun. Who knew that a day spent exploring the world of pork could be so inspiring? We can’t wait to see what Farm to Fork adventures await our students in the future!
