WEST LIBERTY
Mid-Prairie senior pitcher Tatem Telfer was in crazy mode June 12 at West Liberty.
More than one West Liberty batter walked away from home plate with a stunned look on his face, shaking his head.
For six innings, Telfer, who is the top strikeout king in Iowa 2A, had a no-hitter going.
Spectators gathered around the backstop area behind home plate knew it as the anticipation built.
But then, a softly hit ball on West Liberty’s turf field took a high bounce. An error. Then, another error. A wild pitch.
And within minutes, a no-hitter turned into a 3-2 Mid-Prairie loss with West Liberty’s players jumping into a celebration pile at home.
Telfer struck out nine and gave up just one hit. He also had a game-high two hits as a batter.
The loss was the Golden Hawks’ third straight to the Comets, who had swept the Hawks earlier in the week at Mid-Prairie.
Telfer’s 47 strikeouts this season rank No. 1 in 2A and No. 10, all classes. He is an Arkansas State recruit.
