Midnight gunfire wakes Lone Tree neighborhood

Property damage in excess of $10,000 was incurred by a Lone Tree neighborhood around midnight Monday, August 15, when shots were fired, hitting residences, garages, and vehicles.

Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of shots fired at 210 Seibert St., a home located on the eastern edge of Lone Tree.  According to the complaints filed, deputies canvassed the area and heard an individual yelling for help at the residence.  They noticed several bullet holes in the garage door that appeared to have been fired from inside the garage.  The deputies proceeded to clear the house and located an individual, later identified as Jonathan Dargitz of Iowa City, lying on the floor inside the garage.

The defendant was surrounded by numerous 9mm shell casings, and an empty 33-round 9mm magazine was located beneath him.  A 9mm Glock handgun, containing an empty magazine with the slide locked back, was found under the vehicle next to him.

During the investigation, the Sheriff’s department learned the defendant brought the handgun to the location and later began shooting from the closed garage door to the outside, thinking that people were outside trying to get him.  Several neighboring properties were damaged by the gunshots, including an occupied residence, garage, and vehicle.

A NCIC check of the Glock’s serial number indicated the handgun was reported stolen from Coralville on April 16, 2023.

Dargitz, 33, was arrested and charged with Criminal Mischief 1st Degree, Reckless Use of a Firearm with Property Damage, and Trafficking in Stolen Weapons.

Every person accused of any crime is considered innocent until proven guilty according to law.
