The Moss Country Friends Chapter of the P. Buckley Moss Society sponsored a bus trip to Galena, Illinois on June 26. Thirty-two members and guests toured Linmar Gardens in the morning, then had time in the afternoon to explore downtown Galena.
Linmar Gardens are nestled in a hillside overlooking the historic town of Galena and consist of three and a half acres situated on natural limestone outcroppings, which have been enhanced with hand built rock walls, terraces, a flowing brook and a 20-foot waterfall. Included in the many plantings are hostas, viburnums, conifers, grasses and daylilies. A sunken garden and pool are built within the ruins of one of the first African-American churches in Illinois.
Downtown Galena provided tour group members with many restaurants, antique shops and gift shops in which to spend the rest of the day before returning home in the late afternoon.
The next chapter meeting will be held on Monday, July 26, at the Kalona United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. Moss Country Friends will be celebrating the fifth birthday of the chapter with a potluck dinner at that time.
