RIVERSIDE
Two Cedar Rapids residents died in a head-on collision Sunday on Hwy 218 just north of the Riverside exit. The accident concluded a high-speed police chase that began 30 minutes earlier in Muscatine.
The Muscatine Police Department responded to a call around 3:15 p.m. on Dec. 8 after multiple reports were received of a female driving through Muscatine shooting at people. Officers located the suspect vehicle and attempted to stop the driver; however, she refused to yield, thus initiating a vehicle pursuit.
A Muscatine officer involved in the pursuit lost control of his vehicle and crashed near the Cedar River; he was transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Other law enforcement agencies picked up the chase, trailing the suspect’s Nissan Rogue west through Louisa and into Washington County. The suspect, Brittany Miles, 36, entered Hwy 218 driving northbound in the southbound lanes until she hit a Ford Explorer, driven by Olivia Alvarez, 27, head-on. Miles died on impact and Alvarez died after life-saving efforts were attempted.
Riverside Fire and EMS responded to the accident about 3:55 p.m.
An additional vehicle reported being struck on Hwy 218 in the course of the pursuit, damaging the driver’s side window and mirror. Muscatine Police report no one was injured during the shooting incidents in Muscatine.
