Sarah Griffith, daughter of Deanna Griffith of Kalona and the late John Griffith, was selected by Unit 427 of Wellman to attend the 54th annual session of the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girls State June 12-18 at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls.
Griffith will be one of 320 girls who have completed their junior year of high school.
The program provides hands-on experience about the political system in the state. Throughout the week, the girls will file nomination papers, conduct political campaigns, make speeches and prepare campaign materials as they learn about city, county and state government.
Rachel Ramirez of Sutherland is the session’s 1998-99 governor, and will preside at the meetings. The delegates will be housed in Bender Hall, and inauguration of the state officials will be in Maucker Union June 18 at 7 p.m.
Griffith is a member of the basketball, golf and volleyball teams at Mid-Prairie, secretary of the junior class and a member of the Health Informers Group, yearbook and newspaper staffs. She also is on the gold honor roll.
