Even if you’ve visited the quilt galleries at the Welcome Center before, you need to go again. Nineteen quilts featuring red, green, and white patterns are on display at the Kalona Historical Village, now through the end of February 2023.
“There are very few places in the country you can see anything better than this,” says Steve Reif, Executive Director of the Kalona Historical Society Board of Directors. “The workmanship is flawless. And the condition is flawless.”
The quilts date from the 1840’s to 1880’s.
A customer of Marilyn Woodin/Woodin Wheel Antiques, Gifts & Quilts put her collection up for sale at the Kalona Quilt Show & Sale this April, and a benefactor purchased the quilts and donated them to the Kalona Historical Village.
This is the first time the quilts will be on public display in the Historical Village’s quilt gallery. Interpretive information about each quilt reveals its date, pattern, and history, if available.
The quilts are displayed as wall-hangings and bedcoverings in the gallery, surrounded by other furniture and artifacts, as well as beautifully decorated Christmas trees. A large-scale angel, vintage toys, and animated bears originally displayed at Reif’s Family Center add to the charm of the festive exhibit.
The Kalona Historical Village is located at 715 D Avenue, Kalona. Winter hours are Monday – Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
