School board elections are September 14 and the first day to file nomination papers is July 12. Deadline for filing is 5 p.m., Thursday, August 5, with the board secretary.
In the Mid-Prairie District, terms that are expiring are those of Ed Whetstine, Elizabeth Curl and Craig Schweinfurth. To date, none of the three have indicated if they will seek re-election.
In the Highland School District expiring terms are those of Rodney Cole, director-at-large, and Joyce Norris, District 2.
Terms expiring in the Washington School District are those of Joe Redlinger, director, District 2; Michael Moore, director, District 3 and Paul Horak, director, District 4.
Nominees in Mid-Prairie need at least 41 signatures; in Highland, 21 signatures and in Washington, 10 signatures for Districts 2 and 4 and 11 signatures for District 3. The law requires that candidates must have signatures of at least one percent of the qualified electors of the district or 100 electors, whichever is less, but at least 10 signatures.
Nomination papers are available from local school board secretaries. A free guide to board service, Care About Children? is available upon request from the local board secretary or from the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB).
