Phylis Colleen Hostetler, 55 of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away Monday, Sept. 16, 2024.
Born Dec. 6, 1968, in Washington, Iowa, Phylis was the daughter of the late Emma Helmuth Hostetler and the late Leslie Hostetler.
She graduated from Iowa Mennonite High School, Kalona, and she married her high school sweetheart, Marcus Hostetler, in 1989. Marcus and Phylis lived in Kalona, and eventually they moved to Charleston, where they owned and operated Seacoast Chiropractic.
First and foremost, Phylis loved her family. She was the planner extraordinaire, always creating beautiful cakes, cookies, and themed decorations—no event was too small for a plate of bespoke cookies. She loved to delight. She had a particular eye for beauty, and she shared those gifts with her children. Phylis and her daughter, Madisyn, would lovingly tend their flower and vegetable gardens and use the flowers to craft arrangements. Her home was inviting and always open to her extended (and extensive) family and friends. She spent her days supporting the work and hobbies of the people she loved, from baseball and soccer games to Caden’s art. She always found space for another dog or cat, and she delighted in their antics. She showed her love to her family in the way she spent her days.
In addition to her parents, Phylis is preceded in death by her parents-in-law: Lester and Lois Hostetler; and one niece and nephew.
Phylis is survived by her husband: Marcus Hostetler; her daughter: Madisyn Wallace (Evan); her three sons: Caden (Grace), Wells, and Rivers (all of Charleston); her two sisters: Carolyn Miller of Kalona and Judy Balbinot of Holland, Ohio; her three brothers: Dale of Charleston, Donald of Warsaw, Indiana, and Larion of Linville, Virginia; her in-laws: David of Goshen, Indiana, Mark of Parnell, Iowa, Ruth of Orange City, Florida, and John of Burdett, New York; and her many nieces and nephews.
A private family graveside burial was held Friday, Sept. 20, 2024, at Live Oak Memorial Gardens in Charleston. A celebration of her life was held at Seacoast Church - West Ashley Campus. There will be a time to gather and to express condolences to the family following the service.
