Phyllis M. Zahradnek, 90, of Kalona, passed away Thursday, Nov. 17, 2022, at Pleasantview in Kalona. A graveside service was held Monday, Nov. 21, 2022, at Memory Gardens in Iowa City. A memorial fund has been established for the Kalona 1st Responders. The Beatty Peterseim Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Phyllis Marie (Spenner) Zahradnek was born Aug. 11, 1932, in Riverside, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Lillian (Maier) Spenner. She graduated from Kalona High School in 1950. She was united in marriage to Lyle “Hoot” Zahradnek on Jan. 5, 1953, in Mt. Pleasant. Phyllis worked at Sharon Telephone and later as a cook at Iowa City High School for 15 years. She enjoyed Cubs baseball, was an avid Hawkeye football fan (going on several bus trips to away games) and going out to eat.

Survivors include four grandchildren: Jerry (Traci) Zahradnek, Jake Zahradnek (Jenny Sexton and children: Gabe, Garrett and Bella) and Jessie Zahradnek all of Kalona, and Clint Zahradnek of San Antonio, Texas; three great-grandchildren: Maddi (Justin Harland), Shelby and Jack Zahradnek; daughter-in-law: Serena Zahradnek of Kalona; five step-grandchildren; and one sister: Mary Carter of Frisco, Texas.

Preceding Phyllis in death were her parents; her husband: Lyle “Hoot”; an infant daughter: Marilyn; two sons: Ed and Dave Zahradnek; two sisters: Delores Zahradnek and Carolyn Amelon; and two daughters-in-law: Debra Zahradnek and Claudine Zahradnek.
