Native Iowa prairie grass and wildflowers will return to a corner of Kalona this fall. Part of the on-going Outdoor Classroom at Kalona Elementary School, the native prairie and flowers will be seeded on a specifically prepared plot east of the building.
The ground was treated by Freel Lawn Service to remove all other growth and the tilling will be done by Doug and Janice Yoder next week and then again at the end of October, explained teacher Karen Fisher.
The students plan to seed the area at the beginning of November.
“The Rotary Club gave a $300 donation,” said Fisher, explaining there also was assistance from conservation groups.
Besides Fisher, the other teachers involved in the project are Jackie Bailey, Sarah Rietz-Aldrich and Sue Lehman.
“The other three have taken classes for this project at the Prairie Learning Center in Prairie City,” said Fisher.
