Pope too much as Pekin takes rematch with Lone Tree

Posted

Lone Tree was unable to contain Kerrigan Pope in the second quarter of a 61-40 loss at Pekin on Monday.

The Lady Panther senior post scored 16 of her team’s 20 points in the second quarter while playing with three fouls. Pope, who finished with 23 points, did not play during an 0-4 start for Pekin, which included a 44-22 loss at Lone Tree.

“She’s a solid player and she brings a different dimension to them, especially inside,” Lone Tree coach Ryan Shelman said. “We got her in foul trouble early, but just couldn’t take advantage of that. They know when she’s in the game, that’s where they need to go with the ball, and they do a good job of getting to her.

“I think it opened up their shooters a lot more than the first time we played them.”

Kasey Chown scored six of Lone Tree’s first 10 points, but Pekin led 21-10 after a 3-point play from Pope. Maddie McCullough and Riley Krueger hit 3-pointers to cut the lead to seven, but Pope scored nine straight to give Pekin a 34-18 lead late in the second quarter.

Krueger hit two more 3-pointers in the second half and scored seven of Lone Tree’s eight points in the third quarter.

“She’s had a really good mindset, since right before Christmas break just being aggressive in terms of shooting the ball,” Shelman said. “And also having that short memory, sometimes it’s really easy as a shooter when you miss one, to not want to come back to it. And I feel like she’s really matured in that aspect.”

Krueger and Chown led the Lady Lions with 11 points each and Avery Lisk had six.

“We’re at our best when we’re getting multiple people in double digits and getting production off of our bench and from our other role players,” Shelman said.

Rylee Shield scored four points in the fourth quarter. The Lady Lions scored the last six points of the game, which included a bucket from Kinley Hayes.

Lone Tree hosted 13-2 Winfield-Mt. Union on Tuesday and travels to undefeated 2A No. 11 Mediapolis on Friday.
