Postcards from assessor new way to report change

The postcards recently received by Washington County residents is a new way of keeping the assessor’s office informed about changes. Property changes, that is.

The cards ask for property owners to note any changes to existing buildings, as well as if something has been constructed on a previously vacant parcel.

Cards need to be returned since they represent taxpayer compliance with reporting requirements.

The card also contains a place to check off if there have been no changes.

Washington County Assessor Lil Perry noted that in the past “we have not assessed a penalty for not reporting due to the fact taxpayers seemed unaware of the law to report. We have now established a method of reporting by postcard.”

Taxpayers may also still go to the assessor’s office, as well as call or write a letter to report changes.

However, Perry noted, “in fairness to the other taxpayers, penalties will apply to all buildings built in 1999 and not reported.”
