The Hillcrest Ravens used the 3-point shot to match Wapello through three quarters, but the Arrows pulled away in the fourth for a 44-28 win.
Norah Yoder hit key 3-pointers in the second and third quarters as Hillcrest came back from 23-13 down to pull within 27-25 early in the fourth. But Wapello responded with a 15-0 run to put the game away.
Senior Lindsy Massner had 19 points and 20 rebounds for the Arrows, who took advantage of second chances after 15 offensive rebounds.
“She did a great job,” Hillcrest coach Mitchell Drey said. “We knew going in that's what she's great at. And in the first quarter we did a good job keeping her off the glass. We kind of dipped, We gave up probably six to eight points off of offensive rebounds to her alone in that second quarter, and that really gave them momentum.”
Freshman Malia Yoder made a 3-pointer in the first quarter and scored all four of the Ravens’ points in the fourth. Esther Hughes hit a pair of treys in the opening quarter to give Hillcrest an early 11-4 lead. She finished with seven points as well. Freshman Lydia Beachy was the fourth Raven to score at least five. She put the ball high off the glass to give Hillcrest a 13-9 lead in the second quarter, before Wapello went on a 14-0 run.
“I love the girls’ effort,” Drey said. “But we've got a lot of girls playing in their fourth high school basketball game. We fought and they hit back. It was a nice prize fight that we had going for a while. They just had a little more endurance than we did, so that kind of wore us out at the end, and we know we need to improve there.
“We had a lot of good shots, clean looks from Norha and Malia, and those two had been pretty good all game, they just weren't falling in the fourth.”
Hillcrest has three chances to pick up its first win next week: at Louisa-Muscatine on Tuesday, and then back home on Thursday against Columbus and Saturday hosting Rivermont Collegiate.
