Ravens flock to state with seven tickets punched at qualifier meet

WAYLAND

This year’s state track and field meet will feature its fair share of Ravens as Hillcrest traveled to WACO last Thursday to compete in a 1A state qualifier meet and earned seven bids to state.

Leading the boys team (10th place with 33 team points) was Owen Scott as the standout junior broke the school record in the long jump with a first place leap of 22-07.75. The previous school record was set in 1999 by Zach Grimm.

Owen Scott automatically qualified to state in the long jump with his first place finish. The junior ended up being a double qualifier as his runner-up personal best finish in the 400m (53.21) punched a second ticket to state.

This is the third straight year Owen Scott has qualified for state in the long jump, placing third last year with a jump of 21-07.75.

Joining Owen Scott at the Blue Oval is Kale Bailey, who earned his first berth to state. The Hillcrest sophomore will be headed to state to compete in the high jump after he placed fourth at WACO by clearing the bar at 6-00.00.

A triple state qualifier for Hillcrest was Rya Scott who led the girls team (7th place with 57 team points) with a pair of top five finishes in individual events.

Rya Scott, a junior, will travel to Des Moines to compete in the 100m and the 200m as she finished as the runner-up (13.06) and in fifth place (27.39) respectively. This is the second straight year she has earned the right to finish her season at state.

Another individual qualifier for Hillcrest was Marie Yoder as the sophomore was the runner-up in the 3000m (11:25.91) to punch her ticket to state for the second consecutive year. Yoder also placed second in the 1500m (5:23.47).

The 4x200m relay team of Rya Scott, Stavia Miller, Karina Bourha, and Niva Helmuth ran a season best time of 1:50.08 to place second.

This finish was an amazing accomplishment for this group as it was within less than 0.1 seconds of the school record. The speedy quartet will also be heading to state as the seventh and final event Hillcrest qualified for.

Up next for Hillcrest is making the trip to Des Moines to compete in the Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships taking place from May 22-24.
