Ravens make school history at SEISC golf meet

It is turning into a prolific season for this year’s Hillcrest golf team. In addition to staying undefeated on the year this Ravens’ squad was able to claim first place in the 2023 Southeast Iowa Super Conference Championship meet at the Heritage Oaks Golf and Country Club on May 3.

This is the first time in Hillcrest school history where they have won the conference team championship and they did it in a commanding fashion. They finished the meet with a first place score of 322. The runner-up team, Mediapolis, ended up with a score of 351.

There were 14 schools who took part in the annual SEISC meet and 74 golfers participated. Out of the 74 golfers the Ravens had four individuals place in the top ten with its top performer almost earning meet medalist  honors.

While this was the first 18-hole meet the Ravens have played this season they did not waver in any way, playing like they have played all season long, better than everyone else.

Hillcrest senior Luke Schrock earned runner-up honors with a score of 77. Luke would shoot a 40 on the front nine and a 37 on the back nine to arrive at his final score. He connected on two birdies and ended up tying for the lowest score of the day with New London senior, Mason Shelledy.

Shelledy and Luke would finish the conference meet with the same score of 77, but Shelledy would take first place outright after beating Luke in the second playoff hole.

The next top performance for Hillcrest came from freshman Rowan Miller. Miller would shoot a 79 to take third place overall. With this still being his first season, Miller is making quite the impression with his level of play this year. His front nine score came in at 39 and his back nine score was 40. He made constant pars and sank in two birdies.

Another top five finish for Hillcrest came from senior, Jace Rempel. Rempel, who played in the state tournament last year, tied for fourth place, along with Wapello senior, Cooper Garrison, with a score of 81. Rempel would shoot better on the back nine, a 39, than he did on the front nine, a 42, to arrive at this fourth palace score.

Just making the top ten for Hillcrest was sophomore, Liam Schrock. Liam, similarly to Rempel, would end up tied with another golfer in his final placement.

Tying with Louisa-Muscatine senior, Xander Bieri, Liam would procure an eighth place finish with a score of 85. He connected on two birdies and sank in multiple pars. His front nine score and back nine score were almost identical, ending the front nine with a 43 and completing the back nine with a 42.

Tied for 15th place with Van Buren County senior, Dylan Richardson, was Hillcrest senior, Josiah Beachy. Beachy put together a consistent game, shooting a 45 on the front nine and a 46 on the back nine to arrive at his final score of 91. Those scores in each nine hole round ended up being his best two rounds of nine this year.

On the Hillcrest team no golfer shot above 50 in either nine hole half rounds. This is just one part of the reason they have been so successful this season, consistency across the entire team.
