Ravens shoot season low to stay unbeaten

Continuing to stack up wins the Hillcrest golf team remains undefeated after traveling to North English to compete at the Knoll Ridge Country Club against Keota and English Valleys in a Triangular on April 25.

The Ravens stood tall over its competition at the triangular, winning with a season best team score of 156. Not only was shooting a 156 impressive only looking at this season, but it begins to look even more impressive when looking at Hilcrest’s golfing history.

“IMS/Hillcrest golf fans, you may have to go back to the IMS Phil Ropp and Jim Miller golf era to find scores as low as what were shot tonight,” Hillcrest coach Phil Schintler said about the Ravens’ impressive outing. “The Ravens shot lights out with a team score of 156. Host English Valleys finished third with a 184 while Keota finished second in the triangular with a 169.”

Finishing number one overall out of 18 golfers was Hillcrest freshman Rowan Miller. The medalist of the triangular Miller shot an even par round of 36 to secure first place. He ended the triangular sinking in two birdies and five pars.

“Everything was pretty well rounded. I was hitting them straight off the tee and if I missed my approach shot I was able to get up and down for par,” Miller told KCII after the triangular. “Hole five, a par three, I missed the green to the right on the fringe and was able to chip in for the birdie. That was a good start to the day.”

Along with nabbing first place the Ravens were able to secure three of the four top spots of the triangular.

Hillcrest senior Jace Rempel finished in third place. He was one stroke short of second place and ended the triangular with a score of 38. Hillcrest sophomore Liam Schrock would complete the trifecta of Ravens in the top four with a score of 39. Liam’s score would earn him fourth place, just one stroke better than the fifth place score of 40.

“Three golfers under 40, a score lower than 156 and a medalist all in one meet hasn’t been accomplished in a triangular in probably at least two decades,” Schintler said.

Hillcrest 164, WMU 173

With an unblemished record in tow the Ravens traveled to the Twin Lakes Golf Course to battle against the Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference dual on April 27.

Still not ready to tarnish its perfect record, Hillcrest came out on top over the Wolves with a final score 164-173. This win improved Hillcrest’s record to 8-0 on the season and a 7-0 record in conference play.

Shooting a one under par 35 to earn dual medalist honors was Hillcrest senior Luke Schrock, this score would also serve as his new personal best. On route to his dual leading score Luke made three birdies and four pars.

Starting to find more consistency in this later part of the season Hillcrest senior Jace Rempel shot a 41 to earn third place. Rempel would make five pars to reach his final score.

Three Ravens tied for fifth place. Freshman Rowan Miller, sophomore Seth Ours, and sophomore Liam Schrock all finished this dual with a score of 44.

Coming up Hillcrest will be traveling to the Green Acres Country Club to compete in the 8-school Central Lee Invitational on May 6.
