Construction in Kalona reached a seven-year high in 1998 with $2,889,900 for everything from new homes to business additions.

Among the new construction is a $275,000 17-unit expansion for the Pull’r Inn Motel on Highway 22 (see story on page 12) and a $500,000 residential units addition to Pleasantview Home near Brookside Estates.

The 1998 figure for total construction is approximately $400,000 more than the previous record year of $2,489,850 set in 1994. It also is more than a $l million increase over the 1997 total of $l,831,700.

Of the total 34 permits issued in 1998, nine were for new residential living units that provided a total of 15 units. Included in that are the retirement duplexes at Pleasantview Home, built by Miller Builders.

Other new residential are Phil Marner, 288 F Place, $130,000; Alta Yoder, 236 F Place, $112,000; Lynn Hochstedler, 1007 9th St., $240,000; Kenneth Herington, 1005 9th, $170,000; Omar Ropp, 226 F Place, $120,000; Ken Hochstedler, 140-8 J Place, $150,000; Roger Holdeman, 1219 12th Place, $100,000; Roy and Mollie Miller, 1406 J Place, $98,000; Richard Oyer, 1424 J Place, $150,000, for a total of $1,770,000 in new dwellings.

Residential renovations and additions involved 10 permits for a total of $59,100. They are Doug Yotty, 807 13th St., $15,000; Rediger Construction, 1305 J Ave., $8,000; Doris Moore, 835 lst Place, $4,500; Dorothy Hershberger, 502 8th St., $15,000; Lambert Neill, 602 C Ave., $2,000; Tod Kahler, 107 S. 6th St., $1,000; Jessica Vilovchik, 607 C Ave., $500; Sarah Manley, 407 H Ave., $600; Alvin J. Miller, 834 3rd Place, $7,500; Alvin Mast, 605 C Ave., $5,000.

There was one permit for a residential accessory building issued to Bill Watkinson, 910 10th St., $900.

Non-residential renovation and additions involved seven permits for a total of $632,900. They are Ed Yoder, 108 5th St., $2,000; Kal Christian, 229 S 14th St., $900; Ramsey Creek Wood, 120 5th St. (Hills Bank Kalona), $200,000; Pull’r Inn Motel, 110 F Ave., $275,000; Reflections, Inc., 505 B Ave., $15,000; Timberline Sign, 116 lst St., $20,000; Bill Kinneer, Highway 1 and B Ave., $75,000; Kalona Furniture, 5th St., $45,000.

New commercial with five permits totaled $427,000. They are Louis Gugel, 609 A Ave., $25,000; Kalona Oil Company, 116 7th St., $25,000; Kalona Historical Society, 411 9th St., $200,000; Don Yoder, 307 5th St., $110,000 and Gaylord Yoder, A Ave. and 4th St., $67,000.
