The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6414 Riverside Auxiliary sponsored their annual Elementary Essay Contest. This contest is open to students in the third, fourth and fifth grades. This year’s essay topics were “I Love America Because…” (third grade), “I Am Grateful For Veterans Because…” (fourth grade), and “I Am Proud To Be An American Because…” (fifth grade). A total of ninety-seven students participated.
Third grade winners were: 1st place, Brantley Mills, son of Natalie and Travis Mills; runner-up, Clara Unkrich, daughter of Brandelle and Brendan Unkrich. Fourth grade winners were: 1st place, Benjamin Longbine, son of Brittany and Jarrod Longbine; runner-up, Allison Hahn, daughter of Ashley and Eric Hahn. Fifth grade winners were: 1st place, Jocelyn Thomann, daughter of Laurie and Adam Thomann; runner-up, Shelby Gibbs, daughter of Ciara and Brandon Gibbs.
The citations and award money to the winners were presented at an assembly at the Highland Elementary Center, Riverside, Wednesday, March 26. Certificates of Participation and pencils were presented to all students who entered. Certificates of Appreciation were presented to the elementary teachers with thanks for their encouragement of participation in this essay contest.
This contest is a project with the Americanism Program for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. Nine patriotic books were also presented to the Elementary Library for students’ enjoyment as part of the Youth Activities Program and “The 13 Folds of the American Flag” Ceremony was presented to close the assembly.
The Auxiliary would like to thank everyone for their participation and looks forward to next year’s contest.
