Mr. Lackender was born May 13, 1927 in Johnson County, the son of Roy Abraham and Erma (Grundbacher) Lackender. He graduated from Iowa City High School in 1945.
Russell Roy Lackender, 72, formerly of 2959 Lackender Ave., Iowa City, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, in Pleasantview Home, Kalona, from Parkinson’s Disease.
Services were Saturday, May 22, in Sharon Center United Methodist Church with the Reverend Robert Barrick officiating. Burial was in the Sharon Center United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Lackender was born May 13, 1927 in Johnson County, the son of Roy Abraham and Erma (Grundbacher) Lackender. He graduated from Iowa City High School in 1945.
He married Charlotte Yoder August 16, 1947 in Sharon Center. The couple farmed in Johnson County.
Mr. Lackender was a member of Sharon Center United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star, Masonic Lodge, Iowa Plowing Association, National Plowing Association and was a long-time Soil Conservation Commissioner and Director of the Federal Land Bank.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte, of Kalona; two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Jo Ellen Lackender of Iowa City and Dennis and Jeanette Lackender of Washington; two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Mark Wilson of Iowa City and Joan and Jack Hershberger of Birmingham, Alabama, and sixteen grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Violet Johnston.
Memorials may be made to Pleasantview Home, Sharon Center United Methodist Church or the Iowa Plowing Association.
