RIVERSIDE
Plans for an RV park were approved by the Riverside City Council at its regularly scheduled meeting June 6, but not without a lengthy discussion.
Several council members had concerns about traffic problems that could be caused by the park. The park’s layout for more than 30 recreational vehicles also produced questions and comments.
The RV park would be located on Commercial Drive, south of Highway 22 and east of Highway 218.
Site plans, submitted by MMS Consultants of Iowa City and applicant Mike Lombard of Riverside, were approved in May by the Riverside Planning & Zoning Commission.
Ron Amelon of MMS Consultants said construction is expected to begin over the summer with a possible park opening in the fall. The park will have a rest room and shower house building with water and sewer hookups in the RV stalls.
“My biggest concern is on-street parking,” said Mayor Allen Schneider. “I just want to make sure we don’t have any traffic issues on Commercial.”
“The parking, we do need to have a concern about,” said Council Person Lois Schneider.
Brian Boelk of Axiom Consulting, another Iowa City firm that acts as the city’s engineer, said the application meets all city codes.
The site plan passed by a 5-0 vote, clearing the go-ahead for the park.
Sidewalks and Kirk
At the same time that final concrete work takes place on the Star Trek James T. Kirk birthplace monument south of City Hall, the city also hopes to get repair concrete work done on a number of sidewalks and intersections damaged by snow plows.
Bidding will begin this month.
Trekfest 38
The Council approved the closure of some downtown streets for Trekfest 38, which will take place June 22-24 in Riverside. The annual parade is set to begin at 10 a.m. June 24. Most of the events will take place at Hall Park.
This year’s featured guest is Chase Masterson, who played Leeta on Star Trek DS9. An autograph session will be held after the parade at the Voyage Home Museum. Live music is set for all three nights at Hall Park, and June 24 activities will also include a costume contest and a Bill Riley Talent Show competition.
