Scarff and Bush lead Golden Hawk golfers in season opener

Missing a key piece, the sophomores and freshmen of the Mid-Prairie boys golf team dealt with difficult conditions in the first meet of the season at the Kalona Golf Course on Monday.

Led by a 52 from Warren Scarff and a 53 from his fellow sophomore Aiden Bush, the Golden Hawks came up just six strokes short in the match with Regina, falling 228-222.

“This was our first meet of the year, and first in 22 months due to losing last season to COVID, Mid-Prairie coach Kelby Bender said.

“Our only senior and only returning golfer with any experience, Dominic McCain, was unable to play.  We had four sophomores and two freshmen in the varsity lineup with no meet experience.

“Considering all that and the tough, windy conditions, I was proud of how they competed. Warren Scarff was the runner-up medalist and Aiden Bush was third, both playing in their first high school golf meet.”

Collin Miller finished with 59 strokes over nine holes and Ben Mattes shot a 64 to round out the scoring. Lukin Rediger and Drew Schlabaugh were right behind Mattes with scores of 65 and 66, respectively. Ian Schmidt led the JV with a score of 63.

The Mid-Prairie boys will be back in action on Thursday, April 1 in a triangular with Washington and Columbus at the Cedarcrest Golf Course in Columbus Junction.
