Schrocks lead Ravens in opener

Sophomore Luke Schrock and senior London Schrock earned medalist and runner-up medalist honors for Hillcrest in a 226-257 season-opening win over Highland on Thursday at the Kalona Golf Course.

“Luke finished strong Thursday, ending with a birdie,” Hillcrest coach Phil Schintler said. “London, who played with him, played very well – only a couple of strokes behind Luke for the day.”

The Schrocks finished with scores of 46 and 48, respectively.

“The Kalona Golf Course is a very tough, small, tight course with a lot of hazards so the better they get at this course, the better they will do on wide open courses,” Schintler said.

Sophomore Jace Rempel finished with 62 strokes and Sophomore Josiah Beachy shot a round of 70.

The Hillcrest golfers have prepared for the season with weekly visits to the Airport National Golf Course to use the range. The Ravens are set up to practice indoors or outdoors depending on the weather and course availability.

“We have two indoor/outdoor driving nets, multiple chipping nets and a 10-foot putting mat with four different stint meter surfaces to putt on,” Schinter said.

“We practice a good amount of chipping and putting as well at Kalona on their practice areas.”

The Ravens were back in action on Tuesday, April 13 facing Louisa-Muscatine at the Cedarcrest Country Club in Columbus Junction.

“Aside from the drizzle and chllly weather, I think the guys got the jitters out of the way for their first varsity competition of the year,” Schintler said. “We have plenty of things to work on and the guys are hungry to get better and shoot lower scores.”
