Schultz and Schrock claim all-conference honors at SEISC meet

Sitting in a six-way tie for fourth place after nine holes, Highland senior Chase Schultz shot a 41 on the back nine at Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course to finish alone in fourth with 84 strokes in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference meet on Wednesday.

“My driver wasn't good at first, but I started to figure it out,” Schultz said after earning first-team all-conference honors. "There were a bunch of par threes and I feel like I executed well on all of those par threes.”

A great drive off of the tee and a birdie on six gave Schultz some confidence down the stretch as he adjusted to a new course.

“The fairways were pretty tight and the greens were definitely a lot slower than they are at our home course,” he said. “So that took a lot of reading, but I think I figured it out on the back nine."

Schultz has already been a first-team all-conference selection in basketball, and in baseball — where he was named co-player of the year by the SEISC coaches.

“This was the first year I've ever gone out for golf, but I’ve golfed a lot on my own time,” Schultz explained. ”I went out to just enjoy it. I didn't really know this would be the outcome, but I can't say I'm surprised — because I know what I can do when I put myself in  a situation where I’ve got to figure it out, and I’ve got to do the best I can.”

The Huskies finished eighth at the 13-team meet with a total of 389 strokes, and Hillcrest Academy was seventh with 383. Hillcrest Freshman Liam Schrock earned second-team all-conference honors, tying for eighth with a total of 88. He also had a birdie on hole six the first time through and finished the front nine with a 41. He was one stroke away from a spot on the first team.

Jace Rempel and Josiah Beachy both earned honorable mention, tying for 21st with 95 strokes each. Hillcrest finished 20 strokes better than its conference showing a Sheaffer a year ago, and all four returning golfers shot a better score this year.

“Even though there were some strokes left out on the course, there were some impressive drives, chips and putts by (our golfers) and some better consistency,” Hillcrest coach Phil Schintler said.

“Luke Schrock was in the fairway every shot but three times today. Liam Schrock hit a powerful 268-yard drive on hole number six and had five pars and a birdie. Josiah Beachy had one par and Jace Rempel managed five pars despite a pulled muscle in his back.”

Beachy shot rounds of 54 and 55, while Niemeyer is closing his senior season playing the best golf of his career. His 50 on the front nine was the third-best nine hole score of his career, and he followed it up with a solid 55 on the back nine.

“More impressive, this past week he shot his best and second-best career scores in the two previous meets,” Schintler said.

It was the first 18-hole meet of the season for Hillcrest.

Dominic Graap had a solid day for Lone Tree, shooting 49 and 53 to finish 39th out of 68.

Highland’s Peyton Yeggy shot a 48 and a 51 to tie for 35th with 99 strokes. Trevor McFarland shot 52 and 51 to tie for 41st with Colton Sypherd, who finished with a 49 on the back nine for a total of 103 as well.

Kaige Vonnahme shot rounds of 54 and 52, while Luke Miller bounced back from a 60 on the front nine to shoot 53 over the last nine holes.

Sebastian Jacque had nine-hole scores of 61 and 67 for Lone Tree, and Lukas Fuhrmeister followed up a 67 with 64 strokes on the back nine at Sheaffer.

Hillcrest, Highland and Lone Tree all begin postseason play at the sectional meet in North English on Wednesday May 11. HLV, Iowa Valley and Tri-County will also be competing at Knoll Ridge Country Club along with meet host English Valleys.
